Real food plus USDA’s MyPlate

The USDA recently tossed aside its longstanding food pyramid in favor of a metaphorical plate. Though controversial because of its concession to dairy, the plate is much easier to grok. Half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, and protein/meat should be a minority player.

MyPlate doesn’t distinguish between fresh, whole foods and processed, preservative-happy foodlike substances. How can real foodies reconcile their emphasis on natural ingredients with the USDA’s recommendations? Civil Eats and Kristin Wartman take a stab with a handy infographic.
